Darren has produce an investigator’s guide book that, unlike many I have seen, has “just the facts” and pertinent information. Presented in an easy to follow and logical progression that can aid in the verification or exclusion of a suspected autoerotic death. Being as sensitive and provocative subject as it is, this guide book provides the needed thorough insight in a professional manner without sacrificing valuable information. The information is provided in a manner that can be appealing to investigators irregardless of their experience or skill level. I can easily see why Investigators, including myself, would want to keep a copy handy for a quick reference, not to mention having it available when training or giving lectures on the subject. A must read for medicolegal death investigators and others, March 8, 2015
This was such a rewarding book. It gave me a lot more insight into autoerotic deaths and the various aspects of their proper medicolegal investigation. Knowing these cases are rare causes me to think they are prone to being misunderstood and quite easily misdiagnosed. Because of the social taboos, I’m sure historical background on the victim is not easy to acquire.
The subject matter is written in an easy-to-follow and logical progression; it provides appeal to a wide range of experience and skill level (including all manner of death investigators, coroners, medical examiners, and others professionally interested in this subject). The reader is given the tools and information needed to accurately investigate autoerotic death cases. I highly recommend this book.

Darren put together a book that is detailed like a textbook, but flows like a guide – not technical beyond the investigator’s need, and a resource for every investigator that may find themselves involved in a death investigation. Autoerotic deaths are uncommon, so it is better to be prepared and get it right. From what is and isn’t an autoerotic death to scene investigation and evidence, to case examples – you’re covered. Having been in death investigation since 2002, I learned more than a few new things and will recommend this to our colleagues.
